This product no longer carries the BioGro Logo, nothing has changed but we are experiencing formulation issues which means we are trying a different ingredient (Aloe Vera Liquid) that is not Organic Certified but completely natural.

FAQ's about PABA

It was approved for inclusion in our formulas by Bio Gro NZ in 2003 and we make the only suncream on the market that contains 99% Organic Certified ingredients (12% natural Aloe Vera). PABA (para-aminobenzioc acid) is water soluble B vitamin found in blackstrap molasses, bran, brewers yeast, eggs, liver, milk, rice, organ meats etc. It is well known for it's ability to screen out the burning effects of UV rays.

PABA is described as generally not toxic by the FDA (and not that we like quoting this agency as we are aware of their reputation) however it is also reported that in high concentrations it may cause skin reactions. We have not had a single customer report any reaction when using this product.

We actually use a very small concentration (<3%) but somehow the cream is still very effective, this could have something to do with the combination of other natural sun-screening ingredients such as Jojoba Oil, Beeswax, Shea butter, Green Tea extract, Avocado Oil, Calendula Oil, Aloe Vera juice and more besides.

Some internet sources report it has the ability to form carcinogens, it appears that at very strong concentrations it can be irritating to the skin, changing the skin cell structure and leaving it exposed to the possibility of permanent damage (as with chemical ingredients in many skin-care products) however we have not read any specific reports about it causing skin cancer.

In our view it comes down to a matter of choice.

-Not to use sunscreen at all (the only option if you wish to guarantee against any possibility of chemically induced skin damage)?

-Not to step foot outside during the day time (not really practical)?

-Choose anyone of the mainstream manufactured sun-screening products and be safe from sunburn but not skin damage.

Although there are other ingredients used in natural sun creams (zinc and titanium dioxide mainly) PABA at the concentrations we use remains our number one choice because the alternatives seem far worse.
